Small spaces come with big challenges, but also big potential. Whether you live in a city apartment, a downsized home, or just have a tiny bedroom you can’t quite figure out, this guide will help you maximize every inch while keeping your personal style intact.
1. Keep It Light (But Not Bland)
Lighter colors help small rooms feel open and airy. But that doesn’t mean everything has to be beige.
Try:
A warm white wall color (like BM White Dove)
Pops of earthy tones like clay, sage, or dusty rose
A gallery wall to add depth without clutter
2. Choose the Right Furniture Scale
Oversized pieces overwhelm a space. Look for slim profiles and multi-purpose items.
Favorites for small spaces:
Apartment-sized sectionals
Storage ottomans
Wall-mounted nightstands
Console tables as desks
3. Use Vertical Space
When you can’t go out, go up. Think floor-to-ceiling bookcases, tall cabinets, vertical wall art, or even hanging plants.
Tip: Tall curtains (hung close to the ceiling) elongate windows and give the illusion of height.
4. Mirrors Are Your Best Friend
Mirrors reflect light and make rooms feel bigger. A large mirror opposite a window can visually double your space.
5. Edit Ruthlessly, Style Intentionally
In small spaces, every piece matters. Choose items that serve a purpose or spark joy, and let go of the rest.
Stick to a tight color palette and layer in texture and personality through books, artwork, and plants.
Some of the most beautiful spaces I’ve designed were under 600 square feet. With the right layout, materials, and mindset, small can be stunning.
Need help designing a small space that feels big on comfort and personality? I’d love to help.
